WORLD AIDS DAY ACTIVITIES ABOUND THROUGHOUT HUDSON VALLEY
Hawthorne, NY—AIDS-Related Community Services (ARCS) is sponsoring and supporting several World AIDS Day events throughout the Hudson Valley on December 1, 2011 with a variety of community partners. World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1 each year around the globe. It has become one of the most recognized international health days and a key opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services. This year’s theme is “Getting to Zero.”
World AIDS Day efforts are organized globally by the World AIDS Campaign, which is using this World AIDS Day as a launching pad for four years of concerted efforts to get several key factors to zero: Zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths.
ARCS will be partnering with MAC Cosmetics in their Poughkeepsie and Hawthorne offices to offer complimentary beauty makeovers to its clients. Twelve MAC employees will volunteer for the afternoon to pamper clients living at or below the poverty line. “We’re thrilled to work with MAC on this special day to make these women and girls feel beautiful,” said Ellen Maher, Community Relations Manager for ARCS. “The focus is on them and what makes them strong, sexy women.”
ARCS employees will also be participating in World AIDS Day events on the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, Rockland Community College, the Sullivan County AIDS Task Force’s event in Monticello, a vigil in Kingston, and a rally in Newburgh. The global HIV response is at a pivotal moment, where huge strides forward are at serious risk and current approaches are reaching their limits. Only one third of the 15 million people living with HIV in need of life long treatment are receiving it. New infections continue to outpace the number of people starting treatment, while the upward trend in resources suffered a serious downturn this year.
