Buprenorphine Waiver Eligibility Training for Clinical Providers: Dutchess County

Friday, April 20th, 2018

Saturday, June 23rd, 2018

8:00AM-1:00PM

The NYSDOH AIDS Institute is sponsoring a free buprenorphine waiver training for clinical providers. In response to opioid overdose deaths in New York State, increased access to buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder is urgently needed.

Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and Medical Residents are welcome and highly encouraged to attend. Under current regulations, authorized practitioners (MDs, DOs, NPs & PAs) are required to obtain a ‘waiver’ to prescribe buprenorphine. To acquire this waiver, physicians are required to complete a standardized buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) are required to complete the standardized buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training as well as an additional 16 hours of online training as established by the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA). Residents may also take the course and apply for their waiver once they receive their DEA license. The buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training is offered in a half-and-half format [4.5 hours of in-person training followed up by 3.5 hours of online training]. Upon completion of the required training, providers will meet the requirement of the DATA 2000 to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid-dependent patients. Please contact us for further information.

Navigating LGBT Adolescent Health for the Healthcare Provider

Thursday, April 5th, 2018

Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals face barriers and challenges that make it difficult for them to find and receive competent healthcare or feel that they have had a positive provider experience. In many cases, this will likely cause LGBT patients to experience a heightened degree of distress and symptoms than their non-LGBT counterparts.

Because LGBT people are members of every community and socioeconomic group, their healthcare needs must be fully understood by all health providers to make the cultural changes required to eliminate healthcare disparities and improve health-related outcomes for this patient population.

The purpose of the Health Professions Seminar is to provide an educational forum to discuss vital topics of healthcare delivery that are harmful to the LGBT community and their well-being as a whole. It is the intent of the Health Professions Seminars to instill overdue change by increasing the knowledge base of healthcare providers and support staff caring for LGBT patients and to encourage adoption of LGBT culture-friendly practices throughout the healthcare community.

The intended audience for this program is physicians, nurses, social workers and all other healthcare professionals (clinical or non-clinical) who provide health-related services to the LGBT patient population as topics will relate to both healthcare services as well as the patient care experience.

“Walk It Off” Program Coming This Spring For Our Poughkeepsie Health Home Clients

Friday, January 5th, 2018

walking in PoughkeepsieHudson Valley Community Services is pleased to announce a new add-on program for our Health Home clients living in Poughkeepsie. Thanks to a Community Change grant from America Walks, our new “Walk It Off” program will debut in the spring of 2018.

“Walk It Off” will enroll fifty Poughkeepsie residents who are living with obesity and at least one other chronic health condition and receiving care management services. The program will run for six months, with monthly sessions led by a program coordinator and mid-month follow-up meetings with each client’s care manager.

Sessions topics will include how to get started with a walking program, its health benefits, keeping motivated, where to walk, and safety. During each session, participants will identify a walking goal to achieve before the next session. They will receive a “walking map” of the city to help identify walking goals, which may include other support services in their community. If a client is struggling, their care manager will help them find ways to overcome barriers so they stay on track and achieve their walking goal. Clients will benefit from the program by losing weight, improving their cardiovascular health, and improving their self-confidence.

Volunteer Kick-off for “The Most Important Meal”

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017

Help Hudson Valley Community Services feed local people living with chronic illness so they can stay as healthy and active as possible! We’re gearing up for a new fundraiser to support our food and nutrition programs, called The Most Important Meal. You can help by lining up sponsors, selling ads, collecting silent auction items, and (literally) bringing people to the table.

We’re having a kick-off volunteer committee meeting on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in our Poughkeepsie office. You’ll learn more about our food programs and the event plans thus far. Even if you can’t make this meeting you can still sign up for a subcommittee!

RSVP here or to Anthony at (914) 785-8277 or aaccomando@hudsonvalleycs.org.

A Special Announcement: No Hudson Valley AIDS Walk 2017

Monday, April 24th, 2017

If you’re a longtime supporter, you may be wondering why you haven’t yet seen anything about the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk, usually held in May. The Hudson Valley Community Services will not be holding its customary Hudson Valley AIDS Walk this year.

After twenty-four years of holding the AIDS Walk, we felt that it was time for a big change. We’ve been tweaking the AIDS Walk each year to respond to your feedback and bring in new supporters and community partners. The time has come for more than tweaks—we need a complete reset. This decision was made in conjunction with our Board of Directors, our volunteer AIDS Walk committee, key staff members and feedback from past supporters. We are excited to announce that our staff and volunteers are working together to create new events that inspire and motivate our donors, participants and volunteers, and will bring in even more resources to help our clients.

Our new focus includes making the commitment to better serving our clients by identifying key fundraising targets. We look forward to sharing more success stories so you get to know our clients—and you see how your contributions are helping them. We’re committing to a more personal approach to community partnerships. And we promise that fighting HIV/AIDS and helping Hudson Valley residents living with AIDS are still top priorities.

With all these changes we don’t want to lose sight of an underlying principle: our clients still need you! We hope that as we embark on a new direction in our fundraising efforts that you’ll be more energized and passionate about the work HVCS does in the Hudson Valley. Our fundraising staff is hard at work on new ways for you to remain involved. We’re always open to your ideas and feedback, too. Let us know what interests you and how we can meet your goals for helping your community. Thank you for your past support, and we look forward to working with all our supporters as we move forward together.

We Still Need You!

What’s Next?

We’re forming a committee to help plan a new grassroots event—The Most Important Meal, a breakfast to raise funds for our food and nutrition
programs. We need volunteers to help sell tickets, line up sponsors, sell journal ads, and collect silent auction items. The Most Important
Meal will be coming to a Mid-Hudson location in Fall 2017. If you’re interested in volunteering on the committee, contact Anthony Accomando at (914)
785-8277 or aaccomando@hudsonvalleycs.org.

Host an Event for HVCS

Create your own mini-fundraiser by hosting a third-party event. It doesn’t have to be big or fancy, or raise a large amount to make a difference. All it takes is the desire to pitch in and an idea for a gathering. Organizing your friends, family and community and asking them to contribute small amounts can really add up! Help HVCS by organizing:

  • Potluck dinners
  • Walks, hikes or bike rides
  • Bake sales
  • Loose change collections
  • Charity days at your business: collect donations from employees or donate a percentage of all sales
  • Food drives
  • Paint-and-sip parties
  • Guest bartender nights
  • The possibilities are endless!

If you’re interested or you’ve got an idea, contact J. Dewey at (914) 785-8326 or jdewey@hudsonvalleycs.org.
