Jumpstart your Hudson Valley AIDS Walk fundraising now!

Friday, January 7th, 2011

That’s right, folks! The Hudson Valley AIDS Walk steps off in just five months from today on Saturday, May 7, 2011 on the Walkway Over the Hudson. This year you’ll be able to register at either the Highland or Poughkeepsie side of the river and enjoy a scenic high-in-the-sky 2.5-mile walk to raise funds and awareness for the local fight against HIV/AIDS. All monies raised stay HERE in the Hudson Valley to help the 3,000+ neighbors that ARCS serves each year. Remember to WALK LOCAL FIRST!

Walk-Local-FirstJump-start your fundraising for the Walk by creating your online “walk envelope” using Firstgiving.com. Just go to www.firstgiving.com/arcs to get started. From there you can link your Firstgiving page to your Facebook profile, send emails to those you know, and download widgets for your website or blog. It’s easy, quick and secure for friends and family donating to your envelope!

We’d also like to welcome Diversified Investment Advisors as a Bronze Level Sponsor once again, and Orient, the new nightclub in Poughkeepsie, has agreed to host the official Walk After-party. Thanks to all of our sponsors!

Special Events News for 2011

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Happy New Year! We are excited to unveil a completely revised schedule of special events for 2011. Long-time ARCS supporters may have noticed that ARCS did not hold its annual Hudson Valley AIDS Walk this fall; instead, we’re bringing you a variety of smaller events for the remainder of this year.

A Fresh Step for the AIDS Walk
ARCS’ signature community event, the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk, has been moved to the springtime! The next Walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 2011 along the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie—or Highland. (Actually, it’s both, since the Walkway connects Dutchess and Ulster counties, symbolizing what we do here at ARCS.) The newly-revised AIDS Walk will feature a variety of walk routes for those looking for more of a challenge, plus a special ceremony at the Walkway’s center. A volunteer organizing committee is already hard at work on plans (in addition to creating our Halloween Spooktacular as a fill-in for this fall). Keep your eyes and ears open for more details on the new Hudson Valley AIDS Walk!

Raise Your Fork, Raise Funds for ARCS
We’re also thrilled to announce that ARCS will be participating once again in Dining Out for Life, an international HIV/AIDS fundraising event on Thursday, April 28, 2011. Restaurants in Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster counties will be donating 25% to 50% of your meal costs to ARCS, so the more diners they have (and the more you eat and drink), the more funds we raise! Ambassadors will be on hand in each participating restaurant to inform diners about ARCS’ services and to sign you up for special raffles and prize giveaways! Dining Out for Life is sponsored by Subaru of the Mid-Hudson in Wappingers Falls, Dutchess County Tourism, and BigGayHudsonValley.com. Mark your calendars now and get ready to dine for life!

Charity Ball Moves to the Fall
Our final switch-up involves our long-running Charity Ball, formerly the “Hearts for ARCS” Valentine’s Ball. With such a heavy spring line-up, we’ve moved our annual gala to harvest time instead. Get ready to dance, dine and bid on fine auction items on November 5, 2011—and we’re moving to a new location too! The next Charity Ball will be held at Whitby Castle in Rye, a fairytale castle on Long Island Sound. This elegant event will still feature our silent auction, energetic dancing, live entertainment, delicious cuisine and our honorary award ceremony.

Get involved! Each of these three special events requires months of planning by a team of volunteers. Join one of our organizing committees by contacting J. Dewey at (914) 785-8326 or jdewey@arcs.org.

Thanksgiving Food Drives

Friday, November 19th, 2010

We’re thrilled to announce that we have two Thanksgiving food drives coming up, both organized by wonderful community partners. What better way to say thanks for all you’ve got than by sharing a little bit with a family in need?

Ardsley/Westchester County:

The Silver Lining Club at Ardsley High School is holding a food drive at DeCicco’s Market at 21 Center Street in Ardsley on Sunday, November 21st from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Stock up on Thanksgiving meal supplies and purchase an extra non-perishable food item to drop off outside at the ARCS table. The Club is also accepting donations of cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items, as these items are often expensive for families of ARCS’ clients. Ideal items include laundry detergent, household cleansers, shampoo, moisturizer, shaving cream, soap and deodorant.

Poughkeepsie/Dutchess County:

Thanksgiving is almost here, and you know what that means; Everyone is home for the Holiday! Yes, that’s right – the Wednesday night before Turkey Day is one of the biggest nights of the year to go out!

That said, join your old friends – and make some new ones, too – during Big Gay Wednesday at Babycakes Cafe on Collegeview Avenue in Poughkeepsie. The party starts at 9pm on Thanksgiving Eve, and goes until 2am… so you’ll have plenty of time to catch up with your friends.

In the spirit of giving, BGHV and Babycakes have partnered with ARCS – AIDS-Related Community Services – to help stock their Poughkeepsie food closet We know we CAN do it; but we need your help! Bring a grocery bag of non-perishable food items with you to Babycakes this Wednesday Night, Nov. 24th, and you’ll receive a coupon good for a two-for-one cocktail (limit one per person) that evening!

In addition, everyone that brings a bag of non-perishable food to Babycakes this Wednesday will also be entered to win two tickets for Christmas with Tom and Trixie: Is That All There Is? on Thursday, December 16th at 8pm.

Not only will you get a chance to imbibe, dine on a dessert with your friends, or enjoy the beats served up by the boys of Prephab, but you’ll also have the chance to help ensure that those less fortunate will have something to eat this holiday season.

So put on a cute new outfit, raid your pantry and fill a bag, and come on out to Big Gay Wednesday at Babycakes this November 24th; we’ll see you there!

Babycakes Cafe is located at 1-3 Collegeview Avenue near Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.

The Return of Dining Out for Life!

Monday, July 12th, 2010

logo-descriptionHello ARCS friends and supporters:

My name is J. Dewey, and I’m the Director of Public Relations and Resource Enhancement for ARCS. I’m very excited to announce that ARCS will be bringing back Dining Out for Life, our restaurant fundraising event, for 2011. Dining Out for Life is an international event hosted by local HIV/AIDS charities, with over 60 participating cities and regions across North America. Food Network star (and former Queer Eye guy) Ted Allen and renown actress Pam Grier are our spokepeople!

On the fourth Thursday of April each year, participating restaurants will donate a certain percentage of their income to ARCS. So, the more YOU dine out at these restaurants, the more they’re able to contribute to helping our programs and services for Hudson Valley residents dealing with HIV/AIDS.

Though it seems like a long way off, please mark your calendars now for Thursday, April 28, 2011! We’ll be working diligently to sign up restaurants, get volunteers involved, recruiting table captains and diners, and putting together a media campaign. If you’re a restaurant owner – or if you’re a frequent patron of a particular restaurant you think would like to participate – contact me at jdewey@arcs.org and we’ll send you all the information on becoming a DOFL restaurant! You can also sign up for our e-mail newsletter to stay in the loop on all our upcoming events.

MUCH more information coming soon!

Thank you very much for your interest in ARCS and our clients in need.

J. Dewey

Join the Planning Committee for the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk!

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Looking to get involved with something really juicy and meaningful? Want to have a huge impact on the lives of people in great need in the Hudson Valley? ARCS is now forming a volunteer planning committee to help us put on this year’s Hudson Valley AIDS Walk. We need help recruiting teams, walkers and other volunteers; bringing in corporate sponsors and local businesses as partners; finding great entertainment; planning fun activities and giveaways; organizing smaller events leading up to the Walk to publicize the event; tabling at local venues like the Poughkeepsie Galleria to raise awareness, and many other aspects of this huge event.

The committee will meet each month beginning in April at our Poughkeepsie office in the early evenings. We haven’t set an exact date and time for our first meeting yet, since that will depend on committee members’ availability. The Walk itself is slated to occur in late September, hopefully on the Walkway Over the Hudson!

For more information or to join the committee, please call J. Dewey at (914) 785-8326.

Enjoy an Elegant Easter Brunch and Support ARCS

Friday, March 12th, 2010

On Saturday April 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., The Culinary Institute of America’s graduating class of April 15, 2010 present “An Elegant Easter Brunch” to benefit AIDS-Related Community Services and the Brian Smith Scholarship Fund at the magical on-campus Ristorante Caterina de’ Medici.

Price per Guest: $42.00 (includes all beverages, taxes, and service charges). Please note: Restaurant gift certificates are not redeemable at this event.

All proceeds will go towards ARCS (AIDS Related Community Services) and The Brian Smith Scholarship fund.

Only 60 seats are available for this special plated brunch with family-style seating.

This event is presented by The Culinary Institute of America’s graduating class of April 15, 2010. These future leaders in the hospitality industry are responsible for all of the planning and execution, from menu development to the overall atmosphere and presentation of the event.

AIDS Related Community Services (ARCS) is the largest organization solely dedicated to providing HIV/AIDS services to people in New York’s Hudson Valley region. It was founded in 1983 by a small group of lesbian and gay citizens. Since its inception the agency has grown to service the needs of over 10,000 community members annually throughout the Hudson Valley.

Brian Smith was a beloved Professor here at The Culinary Institute of America. His C.I.A. career began in 1987 and he remained with the college until his passing in December 2009. Brian taught several classes during his time at the CIA and influenced many minds. Brian Smith was a great man that many faculty, student, and community members hold dear to our hearts.

Reserve your ticket today, before seats are sold out! Visit this page to preview the menu, though everything is bound to be delicious!

Last Call for the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The Hudson Valley AIDS Walk is still on for Saturday, October 17, 2009 – rain or shine! All of our entertainers, vendors, and activities are covered by big tents, so we’ll keep you as dry as possible. Starbucks will be on hand with plenty of hot coffee, and you can stay warm with snacks donated by Hannaford Supermarkets. Registration and activities begin at 9:00 a.m. and the Walk leaves the park around 10:30 a.m.

However, if you can’t make it for the Walk itself but you’d like to turn in your donation envelope, stop by Mahoney’s Irish Pub at 35 Main Street (in Dooley Square near the train station) for the After-Party from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. We’ll be there to take last-minute donations and Walk envelopes, and if you raise more than $25 you’ll get a free Walk t-shirt!

Waryas Park is located at the end of Main Street in Poughkeepsie, right on the Hudson. There is free parking at the Poughkeepsie train station or along Rinaldi Boulevard; just look for our parking attendants and signs.

If you’re a night owl or want to donate in a different way, join ARCS for the official AIDS Walk Halloween Party at Truman’s New Paltz on Saturday evening, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Lounge. Ozzie Rich will keep you entertained until Isis Vermouth’s annual “Horror Queen” Halloween Party, complete with costume contests, prizes and surprises galore! No cover before 10:00 p.m., but all proceeds benefit ARCS and the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk. For more info, visit Truman’s website.

Thank you so much for being part of the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in the Hudson Valley! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Go 'Gades, Fight AIDS: ARCS and the Renegades BOTH Win!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

ARCS held its very first “Go ‘Gades, Fight AIDS” event in conjunction with our local minor league baseball team, the Hudson Valley Renegades, on Monday, August 24, and Thursday, September 3, 2009. Over 80 ARCS/Renegades fans gathered at the Dutchess Stadium–affectionately known as “the Dutch”–for free hot dogs, free sodas and complementary Renegades caps. If you haven’t been to a ‘Gades game, we highly recommend it! It’s a fun, inexpensive treat for all kinds of families, featuring lots of games and activities in between innings.

The son of one of our staffers, a young man named Jeremiah, threw out the ceremonial first pitch for ARCS on the 24th, and our very own Jana Fernandes showed off her pitching skills for us on the 3rd. We gathered in the general admission section behind our Hudson Valley AIDS Walk banner and watched the home team trounce the Tri-City Valley Cats. For the second game, the ‘Gades fought the Brooklyn Cyclones, the farm team for the New York Mets. The entire stadium was in for a surprise treat when Carlos Beltran, center fielder for the Mets, came to play against the Renegades. Despite their star power, the Cyclones submitted to the ‘Gades in a tense, bottom of the ninth showdown.

Special thanks to the Renegades sales team for all their hard work and dedication in making these two events happen! We’re already looking forward to next year’s season.
