ShopRite Donations Roll In

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016

An overflowing cart of donated non-perishables from ShopRite in ScarsdaleHVCS has been the lucky recipient of several donations from ShopRite/Price Rite and Wakefern’s Partners in Caring initiative over the past week! Today, ShopRite of Scarsdale donated an overflowing cart of nonperishable foods for our emergency food closets. Catholic Charities helped them collect the food.

We also learned that our Monticello and Newburgh offices have each received a $1,000 credit at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York thanks to the Partners in Caring program. Funds came through ShopRite in Monticello and in Vails Gate. We are extremely grateful for ShopRite’s ongoing support for our emergency food closets!

Empty Bowls Returns for 2015

Wednesday, March 18th, 2015

If you’re like us (and so many of our supporters) you love when local food combines with local charity…that’s why Empty Bowls at Rondout Valley High School is such a great event! Now in its 12th year, Empty Bowls unites hard-working art students, local restaurants, food pantries and Ulster County residents who want to do good. On Friday, April 17th, hundreds of generous guests gather at Rondout Valley for an all-you-can-eat soup and ice cream buffet. For a $15 donation, choose from a one-of-a-kind handmade bowl and get your fill–or opt for a $5 paper bowl. You get to take home your beautiful bowl when you’re done! All proceeds benefit local food pantries including HVCS. We recommend getting there early, since the handmade bowls go quickly. Check out all the details on the event page or go to www.emptybowls.webs.com.

Sofregit’s Live Cooking Demo for THRIVES

Thursday, January 8th, 2015

On January 8, 2015, local business owner Carla Ramos stopped by our Poughkeepsie office with Chef Chris for a live Sofregit cooking demo. The duo used their locally-made cooking bases to prepare quick, easy and, most importantly, healthy dishes for clients in our THRIVES nutrition program. The chefs had us laughing and saying “yum!” throughout the demo. Thanks to Sofregit for providing such a great educational demo!

Visit Sofregit online and look for their fresh products at local stores.

A Delicious Donation from Sofregit

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

Carla Ramos from Sofregit (center) with HVCS' Krista Mason and J. Dewey Carla Ramos of Sofregit (and creator of the Hairdressers’ Disco Ball) whirled into our new Poughkeepsie office’s food pantry with a donation of freshly-made herb butters and mayo and coconut oil spreads. She explained how to easily boost the flavors of countless meals to THRIVES Nutrition Coordinator Krista Mason. Krista will be able to add the refrigerated spreads to clients’ pantry bags for the holidays. Our deepest appreciation to Sofregit for your generosity!

Interfaith Coalition Donates Gift Bags, Household Cleaners

Friday, December 5th, 2014

Interfaith Coalition Gift BasketsOn Friday, December 5th, volunteers with the Interfaith Coalition, a group of inter-linked religious congregations in Westchester, dropped off 60 beautifully packaged gift bags for HVCS clients. Gift bags contained such goodies as warm hats, scarves, ear muffs, and toys for children, and each is carefully labeled for an adult man, woman, boy or girl. (We love that Interfaith packed these items in gift bags rather than wrapping paper, so our care managers can ensure that each bag goes to an appropriate recipient.)

Another congregation held a Thanksgiving collection of laundry detergents and household cleansers. These items are very expensive for families with limited income (like the majority of our clients), and most food banks don’t stock cleansers at all. We are grateful that Interfaith heeded the call for these hard-to-find items for our neediest clients and their families.

If your group is interested in holding a food drive, toiletry drive, or household cleanser collection, please call us for assistance. If your company or group would like to adopt an HVCS client family or donate unwrapped gifts, just let us know and we can help spread the word!

Elizabeth Arden Donates Nearly 3,000 Items to HVCS Clients

Thursday, December 4th, 2014

Elizabeth Arden, which has a global headquarters close to us in Stamford, CT, recently donated over 2,900 designer fragrances and body lotions for our emergency food and toiletry closets. With such a wide range of products for both men and women, this will allow us to hand out a lovely gift item to every one of our clients this holiday season. While it may not sound like much, designer fragrances like these are often out of the reach of our clients, and a small present can make a world of difference. Special thanks to Marian at Elizabeth Arden for making this donation happen!
