If you’re like us (and so many of our supporters) you love when local food combines with local charity…that’s why Empty Bowls at Rondout Valley High School is such a great event! Now in its 12th year, Empty Bowls unites hard-working art students, local restaurants, food pantries and Ulster County residents who want to do good. On Friday, April 17th, hundreds of generous guests gather at Rondout Valley for an all-you-can-eat soup and ice cream buffet. For a $15 donation, choose from a one-of-a-kind handmade bowl and get your fill–or opt for a $5 paper bowl. You get to take home your beautiful bowl when you’re done! All proceeds benefit local food pantries including HVCS. We recommend getting there early, since the handmade bowls go quickly. Rondout Valley High School hosts their 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to benefit local food banks and pantries (including HVCS) on Friday, April 17, 2015 from 5 to 7:30 pm. This jam-packed event is a huge hit each year that raises thousands of dollars for local people in need.
Here’s how it works: Students shape, create and glaze pottery bowls all year long to build up a huge collection of unique pieces. Guests purchase bowls for a $15 donation and then fill them with all-you-can-eat soups, bread, salad and cheese (all donated by local restaurants). Students are on hand in the school cafeteria to clean your bowl in between courses–and Stewart’s always donates the supplies for the ice cream sundae bar! Guests can also donate just $5 for a paper bowl.
There’s no need to RSVP, but we recommend getting to Rondout Valley HS as soon as you can to choose the perfect bowl–because they do sell out fast!

Drag yourself out of bed for the fourth annual Drag Brunch at Gunk Haus, a fundraiser for the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk! A cavalcade of bewigged, beheeled and besequined performers returns to this German pub and bakery on Sunday, March 29, 2015 with audio and lights by Superior Sounds. Valentine’s Day is almost here, and HVCS is throwing a party in White Plains to honor a few people we love: a volunteer, a community activist, and our outgoing Executive Director. Sofregit’s Live Cooking Demo for THRIVES
Thursday, January 8th, 2015On January 8, 2015, local business owner Carla Ramos stopped by our Poughkeepsie office with Chef Chris for a live Sofregit cooking demo. The duo used their locally-made cooking bases to prepare quick, easy and, most importantly, healthy dishes for clients in our THRIVES nutrition program. The chefs had us laughing and saying “yum!” throughout the demo. Thanks to Sofregit for providing such a great educational demo!

Carla Ramos of Sofregit (and creator of the Hairdressers’ Disco Ball) whirled into our new Poughkeepsie office’s food pantry with a donation of freshly-made herb butters and mayo and coconut oil spreads. She explained how to easily boost the flavors of countless meals to THRIVES Nutrition Coordinator Krista Mason. Krista will be able to add the refrigerated spreads to clients’ pantry bags for the holidays. Our deepest appreciation to Sofregit for your generosity!
