Earlier this fall, we sat down with Krista Adams, who works out of our Poughkeepsie office in our THRIVES North nutrition program. Hear what she’s got to say about the program and what makes it so special.
If you’d like to contribute to our nutrition programs or emergency food closets, please visit our Donate page.
On Tuesday, November 19th, the sassy ladies from SOFREGíT™ stopped by our Poughkeepsie office to donate supplies for our clients’ Thanksgiving food bags. Adrienne and Carla Ramos brought 24 of their Red Herb & Vegetable Bases so that our clients can add some zing to their meals. Pronounced So-fre-geet, “Sofregit” is of Latin origin which means to cook or sauté slowly. SOFREGíT™ Fresh Cooking Base products allow clients to add fresh herbs and veggies to kick off a healthy, tasty meal with ease. They also dropped off a donation of fresh salsas from My Brother Bobby’s Salsa. Plus, Carla added, “we brought the kids along so they gain an appreciation for giving back to the community.”
It’s rare that we get donations of fresh products like these, mainly due to the challenge of distributing them in a timely fashion. But with Thanksgiving coming up, we know that we’ll be seeing clients this week. Some funding sources for our food closets don’t allow us to purchase herbs and spices, so Sofregit products are especially appreciated!
Hungry clients will be picking up their holiday meals from our emergency food closet this week, and they’re certain to find these delicious treats in their bags. Thank you Sofregit and My Brother Bobby’s Salsa for remembering our clients!
The Silver Lining Club of Ardsley High School will be holding a food drive for HVCS’ emergency food and toiletry closets on Sunday, November 10th from 10 am to 3 pm at the DeCicco’s Market in Ardsley. Please donate generously in anticipation of the holidays!
The annual Hungry Artist show and food drive for HVCS takes place on November 9th 10am – 6pm at Inner Light Health Spa, 1 E Dorsey Ln, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Free admission; please bring a non-perishable food item or toiletry item (see the list of needed items here: Holiday Food Drive Wish List 2013) for HVCS’ emergency food closets. This is a great way to support new upcoming local artists as well as helping fill HVCS’ local food pantries.

Since you can sleep late tomorrow, come on out for Thanksgiving Eve and contribute to HVCS’ holiday drive! The Firemen’s Exempt Association in Poughkeepsie hosts a Thanksgiving Eve dance party with DJs Prephab and the DJK and sound & lights by Superior Sounds. Donate nonperishable food items, toiletries and household cleansers for our Emergency Food Closets and “gobble” down free hors d’oeuvre from 8pm to 12 am.
On Friday, April 19th, Rondout Valley High School in Stone Ridge (or Accord, depending on who you ask) is holding its 10th annual “Empty Bowls” event to raise funds for local food pantries – including our Kingston emergency food closet. How it works: upon arrival, you buy a $15 ceramic bowl created by local artists and students – they come in hundreds of different colors and patterns, and each one is unique. Then, you fill your bowl with delicious soups donated by local restaurants, or ice cream (they’ll wash your bowl in between, too!) for dessert.

On Sunday, October 14th, members of the Ardsley High School Silver Lining Club tabled outside of DeCicco’s market in Ardsley to ask generous shoppers to donate nonperishable foods and toiletries to ARCS’ food pantries. The group donned some of our AIDS Walk t-shirts to be more visible, and did a great job collecting food for our nutritional services clients! Thanks to everyone in the club who volunteered that day, and thanks to the kind and caring DeCicco’s customers who made it all possible!
