Last Call for the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The Hudson Valley AIDS Walk is still on for Saturday, October 17, 2009 – rain or shine! All of our entertainers, vendors, and activities are covered by big tents, so we’ll keep you as dry as possible. Starbucks will be on hand with plenty of hot coffee, and you can stay warm with snacks donated by Hannaford Supermarkets. Registration and activities begin at 9:00 a.m. and the Walk leaves the park around 10:30 a.m.

However, if you can’t make it for the Walk itself but you’d like to turn in your donation envelope, stop by Mahoney’s Irish Pub at 35 Main Street (in Dooley Square near the train station) for the After-Party from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. We’ll be there to take last-minute donations and Walk envelopes, and if you raise more than $25 you’ll get a free Walk t-shirt!

Waryas Park is located at the end of Main Street in Poughkeepsie, right on the Hudson. There is free parking at the Poughkeepsie train station or along Rinaldi Boulevard; just look for our parking attendants and signs.

If you’re a night owl or want to donate in a different way, join ARCS for the official AIDS Walk Halloween Party at Truman’s New Paltz on Saturday evening, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Lounge. Ozzie Rich will keep you entertained until Isis Vermouth’s annual “Horror Queen” Halloween Party, complete with costume contests, prizes and surprises galore! No cover before 10:00 p.m., but all proceeds benefit ARCS and the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk. For more info, visit Truman’s website.

Thank you so much for being part of the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in the Hudson Valley! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Performance of "Canned Ham" Benefits the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Join us on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 8:00 pm at the Cunneen Hackett Arts Center in Poughkeepsie for a special performance of the one-man show “Canned Ham!”
Tom Judson
Canned Ham is an insider ’show-biz musical’ that recounts the true life adventures of Tom Judson, and established actor off and on Broadway. Tom’s theater career was thriving, and he was composing music for films and television (including Metropolitan, MTV and even Sesame Street) when he made an unexpected splash in adult movies as “Guy Mattox.” To date he is still the oldest recipient of the GayVN ‘Performer of the Year’ Award!

In Canned Ham Tom recalls working with show business greats Rob Marshall (director of Chicago), Ann Magnuson, Teri Hatcher, and many others. In this moving and hilarious show, Judson accompanies himself on the accordion while revealing what it’s really like on the set of a porn movie (and explaining that being a male escort can have some surprisingly touching moments…). Warning for those faint of heart; the show is R-rated and contains graphic language and adult themes, but above all, Canned Ham is a comedy.

You can purchase your tickets online at http://www.biggayhudsonvalley.com/?p=2771
for the Friday, October 16th performance of Canned Ham for just $15 per person. Not only will you enjoy a show by a talented Broadway performer, you’ll also be supporting the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk on Saturday, October 17th, as a portion of the proceeds will benefit ARCS.

Tickets will be available at the door, although you are strongly encouraged to by them in advance by visiting the link above or by checking out http://www.BigGayHudsonValley.com

We’re excited to announce that we’re adding a whole new component to this year’s Hudson Valley AIDS Walk: the official after-hours Halloween Party! Join us for a frighteningly fun time at Truman’s nightclub in New Paltz on Saturday, October 17th – after all the festivities in Poughkeepsie’s Waryas Park – beginning at 7:00 p.m. From 7:00 to 11:00 pm ARCS staff will be handing out free safer sex supplies, taking donations from those of you who couldn’t make it to the Walk itself, and raffling off a bunch of spooky prizes. Lounge singer Ozzie Rich will keep you entertained in Truman’s lounge (of course – where else would a lounge singer perform?) There’s no cover before 10:00 pm!

Once the clock strikes 10:00 p.m., it’s time for Isis Vermouth’s 3rd Annual Horror Drag Queen Ball! Featuring dancers, performances, contests and more campy, scary surprises! 25% of your cover charge will go directly to ARCS’ programs for people with HIV.

Westchester County's First Gay Pride Event

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Westchester’s first LGBTQ Pride event is here…FINALLY!

Westchester County didn’t have a pride festival…that is until NOW! More to the point, we’re making up for lost time with an event like none other in our area!

Join ARCS, the rest of the Westchester Pride Coalition and hundreds of LGBTQ Westchester residents for a day of WESTCHESTER PRIDE at PLAYLAND, when your LGBT family, friends, allies, and kids of all ages come to celebrate. Better yet, your discounted admission gets you onto all the rides, all day, and all you want.

WEAR RED! We’re encouraging all attendees to wear something red so that we stand out loud and proud!

Your first stop will be the Pride Pavilion right inside Playland, where you can peruse the vendors selling LGBT paraphernalia, or take in some light entertainment, or meet and greet your friends and make new ones. Come and visit the LGBT organizations and groups that make up the Westchester Pride Coalition, the guys and gals who are making it all possible!

Then it’s time to hit those rides! A variety of mealtime and ride Meet-Ups are scheduled throughout the day, where we’ll set a time and ride for various components of our LGBT community, so you can meet new friends, just like you! Don’t forget, Playland has dozens of rides for smaller kids, so you gay moms and dads out there be sure to bring your children.

We’ll have entertainment throughout the day, including a special contest for the area’s greatest musical acts! Order your tickets now by visiting WestchesterPride.org. We’ll see you there!

Go 'Gades, Fight AIDS: ARCS and the Renegades BOTH Win!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

ARCS held its very first “Go ‘Gades, Fight AIDS” event in conjunction with our local minor league baseball team, the Hudson Valley Renegades, on Monday, August 24, and Thursday, September 3, 2009. Over 80 ARCS/Renegades fans gathered at the Dutchess Stadium–affectionately known as “the Dutch”–for free hot dogs, free sodas and complementary Renegades caps. If you haven’t been to a ‘Gades game, we highly recommend it! It’s a fun, inexpensive treat for all kinds of families, featuring lots of games and activities in between innings.

The son of one of our staffers, a young man named Jeremiah, threw out the ceremonial first pitch for ARCS on the 24th, and our very own Jana Fernandes showed off her pitching skills for us on the 3rd. We gathered in the general admission section behind our Hudson Valley AIDS Walk banner and watched the home team trounce the Tri-City Valley Cats. For the second game, the ‘Gades fought the Brooklyn Cyclones, the farm team for the New York Mets. The entire stadium was in for a surprise treat when Carlos Beltran, center fielder for the Mets, came to play against the Renegades. Despite their star power, the Cyclones submitted to the ‘Gades in a tense, bottom of the ninth showdown.

Special thanks to the Renegades sales team for all their hard work and dedication in making these two events happen! We’re already looking forward to next year’s season.

Friday, August 14th, 2009

On Thursday, August 13, 2009 ARCS held its summer Friendraiser–the latest in our series of casual cocktail parties–at Chill Wine Bar in Beacon, NY. Over 100 guests enjoyed live jazz music, complimentary cheese platters, door prizes, raffle items and lively conversation. Through donations and raffle sales, we raised more than $1,200 for ARCS’ programs for HIV-positive Hudson Valley residents in need. Raffle prizes included tickets to “Chicago” donated by Barbara Bennet, a hot stone massage from Aniceto America & Associates, a microdermabrasion treatment from American Laser Centers, a magnum of Chateau Fourcas Hosten donated by Arlington Wine & Liquor, a $50 gift certificate to Terrapin Restaurant in Rhinebeck, and a set of Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignons donated by Bob Brink (Arlington’s wine buyer).

ARCS would also like to thank Jim and Patrick, the owners of Chill, for hosting the event, and for bringing in a delightful jazz duo. Special thanks to Stephan Hengst from BigGayHudsonValley.com for serving as our announcer!
