'Harvest of Hope Charity Ball' Honors Chill Wine Bar, MAC AIDS Fund

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

CH_logo2011_72dpi

AIDS-Related Community Services (ARCS) announced today that it will honor the M•A•C AIDS Fund, the philanthropic arm of M•A•C Cosmetics, along with Hudson Valley restaurateurs Patrick McKenna and Jim Svetz for their consistent support for local residents with HIV/AIDS at its upcoming “Harvest of Hope” gala on November 5, 2011.

A committee of ARCS volunteers selected the M•A•C AIDS Fund as a recipient of the “Hearts for ARCS” Award due to the Fund’s long-standing history of grants to support nutrition programs for HIV-positive clients and prevention education for those at high risk of new HIV infections. Since 2004, ARCS has received more than $67,000 from M•A•C. 100% of sales of the company’s VIVA GLAM products benefit HIV/AIDS service organizations, and M•A•C encourages its employees to volunteer with agencies on World AIDS Day. “We’re doubly excited to hand out this award because of our ongoing relationship with local M•A•C counters in our region, in White Plains and Poughkeepsie,” said ARCS Board Secretary Audrey Rabinowitz. “Their employees gave our clients makeovers through their M•A•C Good Spirits program throughout the year, which made these women very happy. They felt empowered and strong just by having someone pamper them for an afternoon. We are honored to present an award to M•A•C for all they have done for ARCS’ clients.”

A second Hearts for ARCS award will go to two local businessmen, Patrick McKenna and Jim Svetz. The pair owns two restaurants in the Mid-Hudson region: Cafeteria in New Paltz, and Chill Wine Bar in Beacon. “Jim and Patrick have been loyal donors and corporate partners for the past three years,” said Jeff Kraus, ARCS’ Executive Director. “They were among the first to sign up for our Dining Out for Life event and have been involved in every fundraiser we’ve held since 2009.” Both men serve on volunteer committees for ARCS. “They are a true example of successful business owners who give back to their community,” Kraus concluded. Chill Wine Bar will also host ARCS’ Volunteer Appreciation Holiday Party on December 8th.

The Hearts for ARCS Awards will be handed out at the Harvest of Hope Charity Ball on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Whitby Castle in Rye, NY. The event includes a gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, entertainment and dancing. Tickets to the formal gala are $150 per person and are available at www.arcs.org/charityball.php. Previous recipients of the Hearts for ARCS Awards include the Keith Haring Foundation, NYS Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Bedford Hills businesswoman Marcy Furman.

For more information on the Harvest of Hope Charity Ball, call (914) 785-8283 or visit www.arcs.org.

Guests enjoyed delicious brunch fare like this fruit-topped waffle.

Our sold-out Drag Brunch took place at Gunk Haus restaurant in Clintondale, NY on Sunday, April 10, 2011. Over 75 guests enjoyed classic brunch entrees with a German twist while DJ John Martin from Superior Sounds provided upbeat music. Hudson Valley “girl about town” Trixie Starr served as our hostess, and JoJo Gerard reinterpreted classic songs from yesteryear. The Gunk Haus staff kept on their toes (in lederhosen and kilts, no less) and helped us raise approximately $1,000 for ARCS’ programs and services. Funds will go toward the Hudson Valley AIDS Walk on May 7th.

We are grateful to our volunteers and donors: Dirk and Elizabeth from Gunk Haus, Trixie Starr, JoJo Gerard, John Martin, Marquis Evans, Jana Fernandes, Ellen Maher, Eclectic Studios Hair Salon, the Hotel Sierra, Lydia Higginson, Verizon, Dick Wilde, BigGayHudsonValley.com, Billiam van Roestenberg, and everyone who attended this fantastic, fun event.

Local Teen Makes an Impact on ARCS' Food Program

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

On Friday, February 25, 2011, Danielle Klausner of Millwood began unloading the final results of months of determined work. Her father pulled the family minivan up to the loading dock at ARCS’ Hawthorne food pantry and a veritable army of teens and kids poured out, ready to carry boxes and bags of non-perishable foods and toiletries through a cold rain. Her journey began weeks ago when she went in search of a community service project for her bat mitzvah. Her father David brought her to the Food Bank of Westchester, located in Millwood, for inspiration. While there, one of the Food Bank employees suggested that Danielle collect foods for a specific agency, and told the Klausners about ARCS. Soon Danielle was on a roll, collecting foods at her temple, in a drop box on their front porch, and in the neighborhood. Soon the donations took over one couch, then another, until the entire living room looked like a food pantry itself!

We are very grateful that Danielle chose ARCS as the recipient of foods from her community service project. Our THRIVES Nutrition program and emergency food closets constantly need additional resources, and Danielle’s collection helped us fill the pantry…for a little while at least. Lucky for us, Danielle, her friends and siblings agreed to come back to volunteer with us in the near future!Danielle and the rest of the Klausner family in front of the results of her bat mitzvah project.
