Giving Tuesday

Friday, September 19th, 2014

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

For the full run-down on #GivingTuesday and to grab postable graphics, visit their website: http://www.givingtuesday.org/

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.

Support HVCS at this special time of year with a donation to our emergency food and toiletry closets. Your contributions will allow us to continue to provide fresh, nutritious foods, household cleansers, and personal care items to low-income individuals living with chronic illnesses–and their families. Most of our clients live at or below the Federal poverty level, and many have trouble putting meals on table three times a day. And we all know that a healthy diet is essential to overall health!

Choose your donation level below, and make a secure donation online via PayPal. You can also send in a check or money order to: HVCS, Attn: PR Dept., 40 Saw Mill River Rd., Hawthorne, NY 10532.

Urgent Call for Donations: Family in Need

Call for DonationsA Family in Need

“I’ve never seen a family survive with so little,” said one of our Health Home care managers this week. She let us know that a new client and her large family are in dire need of basic essentials, from children’s clothing to furniture to cleaning supplies. “They have almost nothing…no living room furniture, mattresses on the floor. Other school kids tease her girls for wearing the same clothes every day.” To help, we’re accepting donations for this local family:

  • Gift cards to popular stores like Wal-Mart and Target (for clothes and household items) or Staples (for school supplies): drop off at any office* or mail to: HVCS, 40 Saw Mill River Rd., Hawthorne NY 10532
  • New or very gently used girls’ clothing for ages 3 to 12 – drop off at our Monticello or Newburgh offices
  • Basic school supplies: drop off at our Monticello or Newburgh offices
  • New or gently used household and furniture items: call the Monticello office at (845) 791-8871 x11.

Your contributions will be truly appreciated and will help this family live healthier and with dignity!

*Please call in advance to make sure one of our staff can greet you and accept your donation.

A New Way to Donate in Style: Announcing Fashion Project!

Tuesday, March 18th, 2014

Fashion Project's FoundersThanks to our friends at Nordstrom (who have donated an average of $10,000 each year to HVCS) there’s a new way to Fashion Projecthelp out our clients, in style. They’ve just unrolled a special collaboration with Fashion Project, and it’s pretty exciting. Not only do you get to donate to HVCS, but you can clean out your closet AND refresh your wardrobe all at once!

Basically, here’s how it works:

1) Shop on FashionProject.com. When you make a purchase, 55% of the price goes to a charity of your choice (and we hope you’ll choose HVCS).

2) Donate your gently-used fashions back to them. They’ll send you a pre-paid donation envelope or print out a pre-paid mailing label.

3) For every 5 items you donate, you get a $40 Nordstrom gift card. Amah-zing!

Check out all the details on our new fashion kids dress Project page, and start shopping on FashionProject.com!

You need a new spring wardrobe, right?

Mosaic Center Stocks Up on Nonperishable Foods Thanks to Bronxville Junior League

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

Stocking up at Sam's Club with funds donated by the Junior League of BronxvilleLast year we received a $2,000 grant from the Junior League of Bronxville to help feed hungry families in Lower Westchester. Luckily we had other donations to stock our Mount Vernon food closet until recently, but the time came when we needed more non-perishable foods. Our Education & Prevention Director, Barbara Bennet, took a trip to the nearby Sam’s Club and loaded up two dollies with basics for the Mosaic Center. Our sincere thanks go out to the Junior League of Bronxville for assisting us to feed food-insecure families in Mount Vernon!

Hudson Valley AIDS Walk Pre-Registration Party

Friday, March 7th, 2014

AIDS Walk Pre-Registration Party at Schatzi'sHate standing on lines? Then pre-register for Saturday’s Hudson Valley AIDS Walk at Schatzi’s Pub & Bier Garden on Thursday, May 15th! From 5:30 to 7:30 pm, you can stop in and drop off your AIDS Walk envelope and pick up your incentives. (This is one way to make sure your AIDS Walk t-shirt fits to your liking–if you raise more than $25, that is.) Enjoy free appetizers and a cash bar under the Schatzi’s bier garden tent. Of course, the full menu will be available for your dining pleasure (hey, you’re going to be walking it off on Saturday, right? So have a pierogi or five)!

All ages are welcome.

This is also a great opportunity for Team Captains to meet with your team and get them fired up for a final day of fundraising!

No need to RSVP and no cover – just come on down to Schatzi’s on Main Street in Poughkeepsie.
