Get To Know Cornerstone: Part 5

Friday, March 19th, 2021

Cornerstone, HVCS’ merger partner, is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). But what does that mean?

A Cornerstone medical staff member with a young patient.

Federally Qualified Health Centers are community-based health care providers that receive funds from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Health Center Program to provide comprehensive primary health care services in underserved areas. They must meet a stringent set of requirements, including providing care on a sliding fee scale based on ability to pay and operating under a governing board that includes patients.

A FQHC qualifies for enhanced reimbursement from HRSA beyond Medicare and Medicaid benefits. As a nonprofit and tax-exempt organization, a FQHC can receive grants from the government, the private sector, and donations in addition to Medicare and Medicaid funding.
Cornerstone is one of 1,368 official FQHCs across America.

Get To Know Cornerstone: Part 4

CFH staff with boxes of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

As we’ve been saying this week, HVCS is now a division of Cornerstone Family Healthcare. You may be wondering about Cornerstone’s history.

For more than 50 years Cornerstone has been responsive to meeting the needs of the communities in Orange, Sullivan, Rockland and Broome counties. They have focused on the underserved and those without access to health care. Cornerstone’s roots date back to 1967 when four AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers, led by a passionate and outspoken civil rights activist, established a small health clinic for migrant farm workers housed in the Black Dirt Region of Orange County. Like the produce migrant workers helped grow, the then Pine Island Migrant Family Health Clinic grew strong roots, and has since evolved into a mature, cutting-edge healthcare system now known as Cornerstone Family Healthcare.
