Relive the red carpet glamor and runway magic of the 2016 Hairdressers Ball Charity Hair Show! We had a fantastic time at the Ramada Conference Center in Fishkill on Sunday, August 14th thanks to twelve talented salons, hundreds of volunteers, guests, sponsors, vendors, and musicians! Most of this (relatively) small selection of photos is from Melisa Ann Photos (check out her Facebook page) and you can find more on the official HDB Facebook page and that of DM Photography. Additional photos by Lauren Beale.
Special thanks to our 2016 Hairdressers Ball sponsors, Mid-Hudson Subaru, for letting us into the showroom to make this–and thanks for being a sponsor! Huge thanks to show creator Carla Ramos and the owner of Eclectic hair wigs Studio Salon, Cynthia Martinez Moore, for their acting chops.
The 2016 Hairdressers Ball is presented by Phenix Salon Suites and is also sponsored by the Ramada Conference Center, Belvedere (RED) Vodka, Durants Party Rentals, and Rhinebeck Bank.
On Monday, July 18, 2016 organizers of the Hairdressers Ball Charity Hair Show 2016 got the opportunity to appear on the K104.7FM “Woodman in the Morning” Show. Show creator Carla Ramos, show producer Ryan Keith, and Pete Berman from Phenix Salon Suites, our presenting sponsor, talked with the Woodman, Blackberry and the HDB’s special guest MC, Kate. (Our own J. Dewey also made an appearance.)

They were in the studio to kick off K104’s annual “Make Me a Model” contest, in which aspiring Hudson Valley models can try for a spot in the runway show. Interested amateur models can apply on K104’s website and one winner will be chosen at random on August 5th. The winner will also receive tickets and backstage passes, plus a gift bag from local merchants.
If you missed the broadcast, listen to a clip from the show right here:
In case you missed this week’s big news from Albany, Gov. Cuomo announced that estimates of new HIV infections for 2014 show a decrease of 41% from 2006. Estimated new HIV infections were fewer than 2,500 for the first time. The estimated HIV incidence rate (that is, the rate of people living with HIV, per 10,000 residents) fell 43% since 2006.
New estimates also report that 123,000 New Yorkers live with HIV, as of the end of 2014. About 10,000 do not yet know they are HIV-positive (8%). While this is good news overall, the report also estimates that only 62% of HIVers are virally suppressed (they have an undetectable viral load) and are, theoretically, incapable of infecting others. NYS would like to increase this percentage while continuing to decrease new infections to less than 750 per year by 2020.
Gov. Cuomo also announced an additional $4 million in funding to spread awareness of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). The NYS Department of Health unveiled new videos to educate the public about PrEP and a new website, PrEPforSex.org.
This summer The Bronx Museum of the Arts will present Art AIDS America, the first exhibition to examine the deep and ongoing influence of the AIDS crisis on American art and culture. The exhibition will feature more than 125 works in a wide range of media dating from 1981 to the present day, by artists including Félix González-Torres, Derek Jackson, Kia Labeija, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Martin Wong. The exhibition, on view from July 13 through September 25, is organized by the Tacoma Art Museum in partnership with The Bronx Museum of the Arts.
At long last, thanks to our relatively new CQI/Data/Grants Department*, you can check out all our programs and services in one handy graphic. Visit our new “Programs at a Glance” page for a look! We invite you to explore all our programs on their specific pages, which you’ll find under the “Services Offered” tab on this site.
If you have a question about any of our programs, call us at (914) 345-8888 or your nearest HVCS office.
*These functions have been around for a while, but they’re now consolidated in one brand-new department overseen by Adie Shore.
It was Red Nose Day at HVCS’ Poughkeepsie and Kingston offices! Our Case Managers celebrated several months of not being “in the red” in their quality assurance data dashboard. This means that the program has been meeting or exceeding Department of Health performance standards. Way to go, Dutchess & Ulster case managers!
Thanks to everyone who walked, ran, volunteered, supported and sponsored the 2016 Hudson Valley AIDS Walk and 5K run on Saturday, May 7th! It was a great day despite a little rain with plenty of music, food, and outdoor fun. We also had a very special afterparty, “Heels for Hope,” later on at the Firemen’s Exempt Association.
Here’s a look back at the big event, thanks to videographer Nijinsky De La Cruz and photographer Tracey Buzzanco.
